Avian Influenza Surveillance
Since August 2006, as part of the national wild bird surveillance and early detection plan, the Native American Fish & Wildlife Society partnered with the USDA APHIS WS Avian Influenza Surveillance team. The focus of the partnership is to address the surveillance needs within Indian Country.

Projects Purpose
Avian Influenza Surveillance purposes are the following:

  • Stopping, slowing, or limiting the spread of the deadly H5N1 highly pathogenic influenza to the United States, therefore, limiting the possible spread inside the United States, and mitigating the disease, suffering and death.
  • To sustain infrastructure and mitigating impacts to the US society and its economy. Participating in actual AI surveillance and detection will help in securing rapid reporting of outbreaks, expand our domestic livestock and wildlife surveillance activities to ensure early warning of the spread of an outbreak to our shores and land base.

The NAFWS Avian Influenza Project
Since 2006, the NAFWS Avian Influenza Project has been at an operational level of training, technical assistance, and information dissemination since the training of its staff. It has been on the ground providing services to all interested Tribes. Initially the Project has generated an incredible amount of interest from Tribes whether it is a Tribe requesting training or the Project seeking interest from Tribes. Lastly, avian influenza samples have been obtained from a variety of tribal lands from all areas of Indian Country.
