WILDLIFE HANDLING AND CHEMICAL IMMOBILIZATION
July 11 – 13, 2023 — ORONO, ME

Instructor Dr. Mark Johnson DVM, Instructor & CEO of  Global Wildlife Resources (GWR); in conjunction with the Native American Fish & Wildlife Society (NAFWS) and the Penobscot Nation will offer a 3-day Wildlife Handling & Chemical Immobilization Course July 11-13, 2023, at the Black Bear Inn in Orono, ME. This event is hosted by the Penobscot Nation.

This class is designed for Tribal wildlife professionals, Tribal animal control officers, and Tribal Conservation Law Enforcement Officers (CLEO). The course is limited to 25 participants so register early! The course includes labs each day, course notebook and Certificate of Training.

GWR is dedicated to supporting wildlife professionals with humane capture and handling through training & field assistance. This unique training focuses on the field-based needs for chemical immobilization of captive and free ranging wildlife and is the most extensive training you can receive in North America. 

Hands on Labs Each Day (9 a.m. -5 p.m. DAILY):

  • Chemical Immobilization – Participants immobilize live animals.
  • TPR Lab- a practice lab with live animals to prepare for the chemical immobilization lab.
  • Drug Delivery Systems- Opportunity to practice the most effective dart guns.
  • Needle & Syringe SkillsBuilding professional habits for practical field use and human safety.
  • Blood Collection Practice Station- Practice proper techniques for successful blood collection.

*Drug Delivery Systems * Immobilizing Drugs * Drug Dose Calculations* Five step Preparation for Field Operations * Legal Responsibilities * Patient Monitoring * Sampling * Veterinary Emergencies * Euthanasia * Human Safety * Post Capture Assessment

GWR courses promote care and respect for every animal that is handled and are often preround personal and career experiences for course participants.

GWR courses build confidence, increase field success, and strengthen resumes! 

This course provides CE hours for: 

  • Ecological Society of America Certification
  • The Wildlife Society Professional Development Program
  • RACE Approved for Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians
